Alex Box is a visual artist who's medium of choice is the human face. Simply calling her a makeup artist does not seem like enough of a description for her work. Her innovative use of texture, color and development of character sets her apart from many others in her field. Models take note: Alex makes it clear that she chooses to work with models who are excited about the process and who really transform into the character she is creating.

In 2009, Rankin and Alex collaborated in a book titled 'Alex Box' full of many more inspirational images of her work that show makeup artistry from an artist point of view.

Inspiration: Color Blocking in Makeup

Color blocking in makeup is fun and bold, and gives us a lot of opportunity to break away from the neutral shades we often fall into using over and over. It's been around awhile, color blocking was seen at Christian Dior Fall 2010 to name just one place and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Currently, it's the biggest trend for nails this season.

Looking forward to spring 2012, color blocking for nails has new variations taking the spotlight, like the gradation color block seen at Jen Kao Spring/Summer 2012.

Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs has been painting bold blocks of color on her stage face since she started performing. More recently she got a whole class of students and professional dancers into makeup. Check out the video "Bizness"

Lindsey Degan's spring/summer collection at New York Fashion Week showcased some cheerful, youthful color blocking.

Here's a more wearable color blocking example from the Faster by Mark Fast presentation. The lilac eye shadow color is taken up from the lash line to the brow bone. The color is sheer so it's not too dramatic, but pretty. Match up this eye with a neutral gloss for an everyday look.

And if you're feeling bold, try it on your lips. Choose a shade or two darker for the center of the bottom lip or for more drama choose a different hue all together, as seen below, one lip pink and one orange.

Ebony, tan and chocolate skin tones and can pull off color blocking with ease! Colors are often more flattering to these skin tones than neutrals. Rihanna is frequently seen sporting bold jewel tones and bright reds and pinks in various combinations. Porcelain skin types may benefit from matching your color blocking to your skin undertone. If you're more olive, go for warmer colours like burnt orange, gold, hot pink, spring greens. Cool skin types look stunning with cobalt blue, plum and silvers.

A little while back Redner Salonga was inspired to do a Japan tribute with Jian Yee of Colby Models. It was a big transformation for Jian, he's a quiet, shy guy and we really pushed him to take on a new character for the shoot. He did an amazing job and we were all happy with the dramatic outcome.

Beauty Tips: Makeup Expiry

It's spring cleaning time for my makeup kit, and it could be time for yours. It's great to get expired makeup out of your makeup bag to prevent infection, acne and to make sure your products are working as well as they should be. I've included some ideas for making the makeup you already have last longer too!

1. Check for the above symbol on cosmetics, including shampoo, conditioner, makeup and more to show you how many months after opening you'll be able to use the item. Consider marking the expiry date on the product once you open it.

2. Look for changes in consistancey, color, smell, or separation of product. If the product has done any of these things, toss it!

3. Choose products with pumps wherever possible as they will last longer than pots or tubes with wands. Scooping the product out with your fingers or a wand that touches your skin and the product repeatedly can transfer dirt, oil and bacteria into the cream, reducing the shelf life of the product and potentially causing acne. For example, a wand concealer would have to be thrown out after around six months, but using makeup brush or spatula with a pot or stick concealor will help the product last up to twelve months. Think about purchasing a pump that you can add to your foundation or creams, like the one above from MAC.

4. Mascara needs to be discarded every three months, or as soon as it's dry. Many makeup artists will tell you they use inexpensive but impressive Maybelline Great Lash Big since we have to replace it so often. Pressed powders (blush, eye shadow or skin powder) and lipstick or gloss can be stored up to a year. Sharpening eye and lip pencils can help them last a year or longer, but if they get chalky and hard to use get rid of them. Keep in mind natural products have a much shorter shelf life than products with lots of preservatives, most won't last more than six months after opening.

5. Sharing your cosmetics will increase your chance of infection, so skip the sharing if you can help it. If you will be sharing makeup, pick up an alcohol based sanitizer mist such as (one of my all-time favorite beauty products) Beauty So Clean. It won't damage or change the consistency of cream and powder based products. However, if you do get any eye infection, be sure to get rid of any eye shadows and mascaras you used.

6. Keep lids closed! get in the habit of closing product right after you apply it to save from spilling, bacteria or excess moisture getting into the container. Store items in a cool, dry place to keep there shelf life as long as you can.

Beauty Bargin: Great Lip Balm under $15

Changes in weather always give me dry lips! Without fail, winter to spring, summer to fall, I need to invest in a new lip balm. Here are a few of my favorites, hope they help you make it until spring!

Aveda Lip Saver. One of my all-time favorite lip balms. Creamy with low shine, it's unscented which is great for sensitive skin, and one of the reasons I keep it in my makeup kit. You can use it under a lipstick or gloss to keep your lips moist, or just line your lips with a neutral lip pencil and dab it overtop. It's also waterproof, SPF 15, making it an excellent choice for the beach or a day skiing.

Blistex Lip Medex is a super powerful lip balm for sunburnt, windburnt, or dried out lips. It works fast; you're lips will be as good as new in a day. It has a powerful and medical smell, but it works!

The original Chap Stick, shown here in the classic cherry flavor. It's the easiest one to find in every North American convenience store and it's great to use in a pinch on dry cuticles.

Softlips always have the yummiest scents. Vanilla and strawberry kiwi top my list. They are moisturizing, but is more of a preventative lip balm than a repairing one.

Nivea A Kiss of Flavor Tinted Lip Care are a great alternative to lipstick especially if you're prone to dry lips. Since they're lighter, glossier, full of vitamin E and have an SPF of 4, I love using them in the summer. The cherry one of my favorite reds, and the strawberry is a sweet pink.

MAC Prep+Prime Microfine Lip Refinisher. One side is MAC's awesome vanilla lip conditioner, one side is an amazing lip exfoliant. Lip exfoliants are a quick fix for dry, chapped lips.

For a sophisticated glitter manicure, you want glitter in your nail polish to be high impact, not just sparkles floating in clear polish. Think gold polish with gold sparkles. If you already have a so-so polish, paint a coat of gold polish underneath. For more intensity, paint a base coat, and while its still wet, sprinkle on some craft glitter. Once dry, you can go over it with a clear top coat.

Lady Gaga's wild golden triangle makeup. It is faster/easier to pre-make panels of fabric or plastic and glue on the rhinestones then glue the panels onto your face than glue on each one individually

These golden lips and the eye above were shot by Miles Aldridge for Vogue Nippon (2006) I am curious what products were used to get that glossy metallic finish, any ideas?

Here's an easy, subtle touch of gold with a gold liquid liner, very flattering for blue eyes. Jane Iredale makes a lovely one.

Paris Fashion Week, Rochas S/S '11 showed one of springs hottest trends, colored smoky eyes. You can work this look at home by taking a cue from makeup artist Lucia Pieroni and blending M.A.C. Chromaline in Marine Ultra until just above the crease, and below the eye too.

Try lavender! It really is a lot more flattering than you think for a variety of eye and skin colors. Shown here on the runway at Etro S/S 2011 Milan Fashion Week, Charlotte Tilbury used MAC Stars n’ Rockets shadow applied over a creamy eyeliner to give the shadow staying power, and intensity.

Looking for something more subtle? Skip the liner, don't fill in your brows (I won't tell you to bleach them like this Paris Couture Valentino Couture S/S '11 look) and try it with no mascara to get a really soft day look. Try E.L.F's Berry Mix for a nice, soft neutral (and it's cheap too) purple eye duo.

What's Valentine's Day without a little chocolate? OPI polish in 'Chocolate Moose' is a good neutral to have on hand going into spring.

Some makeup artists take their craft very seriously. My current makeup crush, Iris Moreau, is not one of those artists. Originally a dancer/model, she has always had a strong interest in painting, and eventually found a place in her industry to apply her visual arts skills as a makeup artist. Her artsy background really shows with her vibrant use of color and wild abstract style. It's fun and adventurous makeup, and true eye candy!

Wanna add dramatic color to your look? Try a loose pigment for that intense pop, like Annabelle Mineral Pigment Dust. Use on your eyes or cheeks for a big dose of color. You can also sprinkle a bit into your favorite clear lip gloss to get your own custom color.

Inspiration: Winged Brown Eyeshadow

I love how replacing your black liquid or gel liner with a brown eye shadow can really soften up the winged eye makeup look. Try using a business card as a ruler and a sturdy bristled makeup brush to create a straight and equal line for both eyes. Q-tips with eye makeup remover can tidy up the mess that can fall beneath the line you create. Or just dust a bit of loose powder on before and you can easily wipe it off along with excess shadow afterward.

Make Up For Ever High Definition Powder, shows no sign of powder texture, and works on any skin colour. It will absorb oil and you can do as many touch ups as you like and avoid the cakey look. Around $30 a pot.

Or, for $6, (yeah, $24 less) in very similar packaging, E.L.F. High Definition Powder will do the exact same thing. Just do me a favour and please don't use that powder puff it comes with, you'll end up putting on way too much. A brush will do a much better job.

I just read Makeup: The Ultimate Guide by legendary Australian makeup artist Rae Morris and it's giving me wild eye makeup ideas and encouraging me to think outside of the box. It has to be the most beautiful makeup book I've ever read. Just amazing photography throughout.

Her secret tip for getting crisp lines like this with eye shadows and liners? Use scotch tape as a stencil and to guide your brush or pencil.

And she has a newly released book I can't wait to check out: Express Makeup.

I worked on this commercial a few months ago and met Quebec/Haitian singer
Luck Mervil. It was for the 2010 Salon International du Design d'Interieur de Montreal
This is the first stop motion project I've ever worked on. It's a very calculated process
and hard work for the photographer because he had to measure every movement. It
turned out great!

Inspirtation: Dark Purple Lips

Peter Som Fall 2010 collection used a dark purple on lips and left faces otherwise pale and natural.

For a less editorial look, pair your dark purple with a neutral eye, although black and gold shadow would give a nice contrast for an evening look.

MAC created a more severe look with a black lipstick and very fair skin. Make sure you add a bit of blush when you go with a dark lip because it can really wash you out.

Rihanna wears a matte dark purple lipstick and keeps it natural on the rest of her face showing a more wearable, real-life look.

This is Tiffany Elton, fashion blogger and designer of Lady Like.

Tiffany asked me to do her makeup and help her with wigs and costumes for a photoshoot for her blog. The concept? Lady Like, the many sides of a modern woman. Here's our original blueprint for the photoshoot:

Modern versions of flower child beauty were seen in fall 2010 collection of Alexandre Herchcovitch with a bold below-the-eye copper and gold paired with a nude lip.

To get an everyday retro feel for your makeup, check out Drew Barrymore. Apply two coats of mascara to both top and bottom lashes, smudge black liner under the bottom lashes, throw on a dab of clear gloss and dust a light peach blush like Nars in Torrid for cheeks.

It's a trend that can go wrong so easily, but when it looks good, damn, it looks amazing. Stay clear of pastel blue and opt for a plum blue, dark navy or candy bright blue for a more modern version. Keep a natural or pale lip for the real world, and don't forget to line your eyes with a black liner and a coat or two of mascara.

This is from a fashion show in 2008 with an amazing designer, Tiffany Elton. The look was dark smokey eyes and red lips. The clothing was inspired to have a modern vintage feel to it. I just love the headbands too. Check out Tiffany's line, Lady Like.

In January I worked on a Plants and Animals video for their new album, La La Land, out April 20th. There were about twenty actors in the black and white video and the costumes were amazing. To name a few characters there were some beat up twin brothers, a war vet, a goth couple, and of course the band all in a church-turned-ballroom that was set up like a dinner party. I can't wait to see how the video turned out. Wanna check out the new album? I found a free Plants and Animals La La Land download! They'll also be kicking off their tour here in Montreal on April 22 at La Tulipe.

This is Jenna. She's one of many beautiful alternative models on Suicidegirls.com. I do makeup on shoots for a few of the Montreal Suicide Girls. Typically it's a pinup style shoot which ends up being 30 to 40 photos featuring girls who aren't your average model (shorter than 5'7, tattooed, etc.) in interesting locations. This one was shot at an amazing restaurant called O'Thym.

Trends: Red Lipstick

The classic red lip.

If you're not brave enough to wear a full coloured lipstick, try a red stain. You can also layer a red stain under your lipstick so it lasts longer. Or try lining your lips with a neutral lip pencil, applying the lipstick, dabing some loose powder over, then reapplying the lipstick. Avoid wearing gloss if you want it to last.

Choose a red with a blue undertone to make your teeth look whiter. Plum reds are amazing on darker complexions and olive skin tones suit a brown red. Pale complexions can wear a true red with ease. Don't let these rules stop you from trying all kinds of shades on to find one you love.

This was with coloured sand. I used eyelash glue (skin), vaseline (eyelids, lips) and hairspray/gel (hair) to keep all that sand on. Clean up was messy.

For me fake lashes are the hardest part of makeup. The glue... the model's eyes watering. This is exceptional and it's made with layering of feathers not lashes. It would be very heavy on the model's lashes and would be hard to shoot for a long period of time.

Artist Biography

Liz Furlong cultivated her retro, ladylike style on the cosmopolitan streets of Toronto, where she was born. She turned to makeup artistry at the young of five; discovering her mother's lipstick, and smearing it all over her face. She made the conscious decision to listen to her father, "You're supposed to make it look natural," he said, "Not like you've just been outside in the cold!" With these words in mind, Liz set out to become a makeup artist, taking Aveda courses and apprenticing, then working at Civello Salon. Liz herself is a fashionista, drawing inspiration from the 1950's to the modern pages of Vogue; while keeping an environmental consciousness, and attitude in her lifestyle as well as her makeup kit. However, Liz stays true to her home in Montreal, incorporating her style with the street scene the city is famous for -bikes, indie bands and trendy cafes. She draws inspiration as a makeup artist from all areas of her life - her early childhood love of lipstick (which has stayed with her!) to her love of classic starlets like Ava Gardner.
